About MES:
The Military Engineer Services (MES) is a unique organization that combines military and civilian elements among its officers and support staff. MES holds the distinction of being one of India’s oldest and largest agencies responsible for developing defense infrastructure under government purview. While construction projects are typically carried out through contractual arrangements, maintenance activities are overseen by departmentally-employed labor (DEL) and contracts.
MES primarily focuses on engineering and construction projects in support of the Indian Armed Forces, which encompass the Army, Navy, Air Force, the Ordnance Factory Board, and the DRDO. Additionally, MES is actively engaged in a wide array of complex ventures, including the construction of hospitals, airfields, buildings, workshops, roads, runways, hangars, dockyards, airport terminals, sewage treatment plants, solar facilities, wharves, and various marine structures. Notably, MES has been entrusted with the significant task of constructing the Indian National War Memorial.
Within MES, the military component is composed of officers from the Indian Army Corps of Engineers. Meanwhile, its civilian segment comprises the Indian Defence Service Engineers (IDSE), the Indian Defence Contract Management Service (IDCMS), and Junior Engineers (JE) recruited through the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). Surveyors, architects, and personnel in the barrack/stores cadres are selected through the Indian Engineering Services and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
